F
ounded in 1934, the Highland Park Garden Club commemorates their 70th anniversary this year.  They meet at noon the third Wednesday of every month (except July and August) at the Highland Park Christian Church, Sixth and Aurora.  They welcome visitors and provide refreshments.

Objectives of the Highland Park Garden Club are to:
     Advance home and community beautification;
     Exchange ideas;
     Interest more people in gardening.

Civic Projects for 2004 include contributing to:
      Scholarship Fund
      Des Moines Botanical Center
      Conservation
      Nature Conservancy
      Horticulture Fund
      Landscape
      Iowa Arboretum
      Garden Therapy

The Highland Park Garden Club also helps at the Northside Library as needed.

Their 2004 officers help celebrate their seven decades of gardening.

Monthly meetings center around gardening-oriented activities.

In 2004, various speakers talked to the group about plant propagation, the Longwood Gardens, butterfly habitats, tour of Iowa Orchids, Inc., a report from their scholarship recipient, garden insects, two garden tours, community garden projects, succulent and herb wreaths, tree identification, and their Christmas potluck.

But they work outside on various projects also.

Some of their 2004 outdoor projects included planting trees at McHenry Park and Waterworks Park plus planting and caring for the flower beds at their meeting site (Highland Park Christian Church) and at Belle Turner Park (on Madison).

Next fund-raising project coming up December 4.

In addition to their dues, Highland Park Garden Club raises funds at Highland Park Holidays in December and their Annual Plant Sale in May.  Their largest expense is the scholarships they give to DMACC (Des Moines Area Community College) students. Some 35 members belong to the Highland Park Garden Club today.
