Turning on Our HP Lights

Dr Dow Bates, our political advisor, suggests we (all HPBC) members need to get to know more legislators on a personal basis.  Many legislators are quite willing to speak at our meetings when not in session.  Dow invited many of them to our Streetscape opening.  Since they were all in session, they sent their reps to read the following letters.

Tom Harkin congratulated us on a job well done.

Ditto Leonard Boswell.  Opponent Stan Thompson was in the audience.

Charles Grassley sent us a 3.5 page letter also. His Iowa representative read the letter at our Streetscape opening ceremonies (Turning on our Lights).   Unfortunately, his rep has not given us a copy yet.

11.04 meeting of the NFIB DSM Area Action Committee

Iowa legislators Libby Jacobs and Carmine Boal met with the NFIB Area Action Committee 11.23.04.  They asked for the main concerns of Iowa small businesses.  Three main concerns surfaced:
     Out of control health insurance costs;
     Using Iowa Value fund to assist large businesses;
     Inequitable property tax rates on commercial properties.

Jacobs also suggested an Adopt a Legislator for a Day program.  The legislator would shadow the business owner during his/her daily duties.  Sound like a workable idea.

12.04 meeting of the NFIB state-wide Leadership Council.

12.04 meeting of the Iowa Tax Payers Association.

Many HPBC members belong to the NFIB (National Federation of Independent Businesses).  One of our members belongs to their Des Moines Area Action Committee and to their state-wide Leadership Council.  NFIB lobbies for small businesses at both the state and federal levels.
