Turning on Our HP Lights

10.04.04 Good Buddy.  That’s the date Mayor Frank Cownie officially “turned on our lights” at Sixth and Euclid at 5:30 pm.  A good crowd turned out for the festivities plus lots of politicians.  Fresh cider plus Oak Park and Highland Park cookies from our Hiland Park Bakery added to the festivities.  Special thanks to our City planner Bridget Montgomery for working at this task for years and years.  She and HPBC and PAF members attended many, many meetings, official and unofficial.  Jasper Construction also put a lot of cement. sweat, and bricks into the project.

SW and NW corners of Sixth and Euclid during the early fifties.

Nice rainy day to look at our new Sixth and Euclid streetscape.

Lots of Invisible Changes.  You cant see our new sewers, our new street drains, or (best of all to some) the wires and large transformers that used to fill our air spaces at Sixth and Euclid.  The Parks Area Foundation paid 50% of the cost of re-routing the lead-in wiring to the re-wired businesses.

You CAN see our new stoplights, street lights, and brand new streets complete with decorative pattern.

Lots of Visible Changes.  Most of us appreciate our new crackless sidewalks.  Our corners are now handicapped-accessible -- complete with Braille patterns to aid the blind.

Closer look at our new corners and street pattern.

New trash receptacles and new pedestrian benches on our new sidewalks.

Be sure to read our historic marker.  There will be a test.

Neat new feature on our "very moderne" stop lights.

Really bright street lights that illuminate our streets and our sidewalks.  You gotta see them at night.

Here we see them at twilight.  Our arch is illuminated at night also.

Brand new honey locust trees.  We'll add the leaves next spring.  Dwarf daylilies at base.

Dwarf daylilies surround our new trees.  Note the electric outlet so we can add Christmas tree lights.

Trellises cover our parking lot fronts.  Creeping honeysuckle will cover the trellises this spring.

Oak leaves love to park on the south side of Sixth -- thus the name Oak Park.

Typical fall day on the Oak Park side in the morning.

Same evening after we shoveled up the leaves.  This shows off our new street lights.

Our new street lights really light up the night.

Same Streetscape from the other direction.

Even a brand new stop sign that fits our new Parks Area theme.

11.21.04.  And just before Thanksgiving, we turned on our Christmas "tree" lights.  The "we crew" included Bill Wheeler, Harold and Ramona Adams, Jim and Kellie Terrell, Jeanette Kirkpatrick, Charlotte Jasche, and Dave Ross.

11.22.04.  These planters magically appeared today.  First, they had a layer of sand.  This evening, someone filled them with potting soil.  Looking good.

Same Evening.
Our lights on the arch needed re-adjusting.  It's happening now.

You might say these adjustments interfere with rush hour traffic.
